About Us

Welcome

Beginning in 1997, Southwest Sports / Southwest Golf Supply got its start as part of a residential garage operation and has now become an 11 state service organization in providing a reliable source of golf products for golf courses, driving ranges, golf retailers, corporate entities and individual golfers serving those buyers all across the country. We are based in the City of El Cajon, a suburb of San Diego County, (the golf capital of the world) and acquire balls by purchase or retrieval activity in all the western most states, going as far as the eastern edge of Colorado and as far north as Washington State and everything in between.

One of the functions in retrieving, refurbishing and recycling all those golf balls is to provide work to individuals coming out of rough backgrounds. Since balls have to be handled personally in so many ways and processes, it provides a reasonable purpose to fulfill a premise of giving work to people as a tool to help them become contributing citizens to society. The main product is to be reused by the industry to become higher grade quality resale, range or novelty balls. If they cannot be brought back to some reasonable use and appearance, they become unique novelty gift items through painting and printing various messages on the ball. In addition, thru this service we help Courses and ranges maintain their greens thru ball retrieval, which in turns, helps to reduce maintenance equipment damage, enabling us to offer replacement stock at very competitive prices.

For individuals we offer a large variety of reusable golf balls, suiting a whole host of the needs of the beginner or expert golfer. They are offered from one ball quantity to multiple dozens for any one order. As mentioned before, we can offer a customizing service by personalizing or imprinting customized logo’s for group/team needs, or for brand identification thru imprinting private names to please the receiver for parties, prizes or tournaments. Our services include items needed only by the golf course or a driving range to provide products to their customers, but also to help them to keep a well maintained facility for their customers to enjoy in non-golf ball related products or services.

For golf industry services, not only do we offer a complete line of golf ball products, we provide professional golf ball retrieval service to those locations on golf courses and or driving ranges. If you have water hazards at your facility, we can provide expert retrieval activity by our professional registered and certified divers. Our divers are aware of course protocol, courteous and respectful of existing golfing conditions, and informative to the course re the conditions of the water hazards, ground area leading to the water hazards. In addition, and as part of our package of retrieval services, we include some on site water hazard maintenance at no charge.

There are some limitations to that so you need to let us know what we can do for you. Or, we can provide services to help out in those larger projects when you are remodeling or doing tractor assisted periodic refurbishing or reconditioning of your existing water bodies or grounds. As part of the program, upon retrieval contract signing, you will be provided insurance against liability protection against claims for up to $2,000,000.

In addition, we provide other services in helping to maintain rodent control through a very new and innovative product called GopherX©. This product reduces the burdensome paper work and man-hours complying with onerous requirements issued by the State regarding rodent control. It is something that can be inexpensively operated by anyone, is portable, inexpensive and really effective. We also offer a variety of industry products including Airmax Pond Additives, Tees, Divot Tools, Flags, Mats, Netting, Yardage Markers, etc. What we are offering you is a glimpse of what we do and products we provide. How We Get Our Golf Balls

We source balls in all of the eleven Western States including every place between our shop in San Diego and all those States. All those locations help in our effort to obtain the necessary quantity of high grade balls to serve our discriminating customers. Whether the balls acquired are from sources that live near the course, as well as those that come from other off course locations, we buy them. In addition to buying playable and range balls, about 50% of the balls obtained result from our retrieving efforts from water hazards through our contractual, restrictive conditions and or arrangements with the courses.

We stand by the premise that balls in water hazards on golf courses are owned by the course. Those hazards have been developed to enhance the course for beauty, serenity and challenges in an effort to make the game complex and enjoyable to experience. The balls are in the hazard as a result of the golfer abandoning his errant or incomplete hit of the ball landing in the water. We know some of our competitors, either individuals or large retrieval companies, hold the position that those balls do not belong to the course. They reason the balls are "all fair game" because it can't be proven who the balls belongs too. We, however, believe those balls are the property of the course and they only have the right to return the balls to the "owner". Consequently, we hold the position that all balls obtained without compensation to the course are therefore stolen, and as such, we will not participate in their activities. As a result, we pay all of our course sources a value for each ball. None of the balls we sell have been acquired through efforts of those who do not agree with us.

All the balls we acquire go through extensive wash cycles, complete with bio degradable chemical solutions, in an atmosphere designed for total recycling of any chemicals added to natures water used in our recycling procedure. Then hand sorted out to brands, grades, other markings allowing us to remove all worn or damaged balls thru extensive multiple handling of each ball. Acceptable grades are retreated via additional chemical washings, re-examined for potential missed processing errors, sorted for final grading, counted, packaged and prepared for shipment.

Some discriminating buyers claim that balls derived from water hazards have been adversely affected in their flight characteristics or in some other way affected in the negative. Our research on the that matter has shown to us as being not accepted as what those claims state. The sources we have investigated show that while there may be some slight degree of variation (less than 5%) from the performances in flight distance area of a new ball versus a ball retrieved, the overall performance of the ball does not affect this distance factor or other flight characteristic when compared to brand new balls except this questionable 5% thing. In addition, from a perspective of how long they were in the water, studies show that whatever variation has or did occur, was not accelerated or increased due to the length of time the ball was in the water. In these studies, no changes were noticed after the ball was in the hazard beyond 6 months duration.

Retrieval Services

For golf industry services, we provide professional golf ball retrieval service to those locations on golf courses and or driving ranges. If you have water hazards at your facility, we can provide expert retrieval activity by our professional registered and certified divers. We coordinate the diver activity with the pro or manager re matters such as ground conditions brought on by weather, tournaments, pre planned course events and so forth. We do not just show up without you being made aware and getting your approval.

At the end of the dive date the diver will notify you of the quantity retrieved and leave you with a receipt giving the date and estimated quantity retrieved. Our divers are aware of course protocol, courteous and respectful of existing golfing conditions, and informative to the course re the conditions of the water hazards and as part of our package of retrieval services, we include some on site water hazard maintenance at no charge.

We will provide you with written accountability for your records showing quantity retrieved, amounts paid or due, or showing credit amounts that can be applied towards products you may desire from us. You will be given an additional $.02 cents per ball retrieved on those items purchased from us.

There are some limitations to that so you need to let us know what we can do for you. Or, we can provide services to help out in those larger projects when you are remodeling or doing tractor assisted periodic refurbishing or reconditioning of your existing water bodies. As part of the program, upon retrieval contract signing, you will be provided insurance against liability claims for up to $2,000,000.

Why We Categorize and Name the Balls the Way We Do

All the balls are divided into 3 basic types. They are either Range Balls which are sold to for use at a driving range on the course or self-standing non course location. Or, they are playable balls (non range balls) used by the golfer for play on the course. Each category is separated from the other category, examined, washed and prepared for the ultimate use. The last category are balls that do not qualify for resale for whatever reason and relegated to a variety called novelty reworked and sold as a novelty ball item.

Non Range Balls

After the balls have been cleaned, we do extensive hands on, physical observations of every ball by our professionally trained individuals who do their best to achieve a very demanding standard that the buying public has come to expect. We believe you would agree with us. We cannot escape the reality that 90% of the balls we sell are used balls. They have been hit before. Only about 10% of the balls we acquire are considered to appear as beautiful as a brand new ball. Therefore, it can be stated that all balls except new ones are damaged to some degree. What we do is to try to separate and segregate those balls into grades that allow degradations to be grouped together, then labeling them in such a way that allows the buyer to trust what he is reading about the particular category to be the same as what he interprets the description he has just read.

We separate them based on how close they appear when compared to new balls and we look for variations in color, brightness of the shine on the surface, how the factory markings on the ball are intact and undamaged or abused, the brand, model, age, “in demand” styles. The markings of the brand, model, number or other factory ID's have to be complete and in very good condition. If they are not complete, they are placed in the same groupings of balls that have the same issues. That example becomes a lesser quality and is sold as a lesser quality.

Some of the balls may have some minor cosmetic blemishes like pen marks tastefully placed on the ball by the golfer while others are horribly marked without the golfers consideration as to how it looks when he plays it. The latter style of markings become lesser valued, while the former markings are allowed to be grouped with balls having a greater value. Some slight color differential patterns may be allowed because they are caused by the sun.

Dimple quality is important because it affects the flight characteristics of the ball. So if some imperfections are observed, they are removed and grouped in with other like balls which are sold at a lesser price. All cuts, creases, damage to the painted skin on the ball, an out of roundness or misshaped balls are removed. Therefore we have adopted the same wordage, to a varying degree, of those generally accepted or used descriptions that are currently accepted by others in the industry as follows:

Purchasing Used Range / Cart Balls

We specialize in purchasing used range ball inventory. We cover all nine western states and buy any quantity amount. Purchase prices are effected by total count of balls available, what brand and or model, color, how long they were in use, current packaging (in original or style of boxes, trash cans, etc.). We buy all types of balls – standard or limited flight, non-factory range striped balls, etc. We usually coordinate this activity with golf ball retrieval at your course or one nearby.

MISCELLANOUS INFORMATION FOR OUR INDIVIDUAL GOLFERS

Note: Golf balls are generally valued by the golfing public simply because some popular or favorite golf personality or whoever, hits this or that particular brand. However, some balls are priced higher than others because they are genuinely made better or have higher quality ratings because of how they perform or were constructed by the manufacturer. Titleist pro v brand and model is a classic example. All new balls sold on the basis of a higher original price are able to be accomplished simply because either the marketing techniques has convinced the buying public that they are worth it or perhaps there is some proven ability to fly further, or straighter, or softer or whatever. This variety is classified as either “HIGH DEMAND” or “IN DEMAND” brands.

Some new brands are priced lower than others not because they are inferior or won’t perform as well as the “HIGH DEMAND” OR “IN DEMAND” brands. This is simply because the manufacturer has chosen a method of marketing the ball thru a high traffic volume venue enabling the maker of the ball to push his product based solely on price to increase his volume thru sales. This variety is called in the business a “STORELINE BRAND”.

Almost all brands go thru the cycle of being introduced to the marketplace via some words of consolation from a golf personality or thru intense advertising by the manufacturer. Generally speaking, this will go on for some duration of time till another ball product shows itself as being more desirable than the previous brand, model or version thru the same techniques. Then the original HIGH DEMAND product becomes less in demand and the price begins to slip a little.

So, as a rule, the original manufacturer resorts to selling the product thru the volume seller. The ball is the same in that it still goes just as far or easier to hit or whatever. The only difference as a general rule, is in the marketing. So, the HIGH DEMAND ball becomes a STORELINE ball.

This same principle applies to playable balls used by the golfer in his/her game or tournament played on any day at the local golf course. It also applies to range balls. The difference is that the range ball is used many more times during its life than the playable ball. The grading rules are essentially the same however.

The industry as a whole describes the conditions of balls in a variety of phrases. This is because all of the balls are used at least once and factually become used from the very first hit to the time they become lost or worn out at the range. In doing this, all sellers of these used balls attempt to describe the balls in some sort of manner that is or can be correctly understood by the buying public. Our ball products generally fall into the following categories and their respective descriptions:
